Long before the roaring crowds and sold-out shows, comedian Obed Lubega, better known as Reign, was stuck in a comedy partnership that felt more like a battlefield than a brotherhood.
He had started out in a duo with a fellow comedian named Sunny, but the collaboration was anything but smooth. “We were always fighting, quarrelling,” Reign recalls. The tension was constant, and ironically, the man who often stepped in to calm the storms would later become his greatest stage partner Maulana.
At the time, though, no one could have predicted what was about to unfold, but one fateful booking changed everything.
Reign and Sunny had been advertised for a gig, a modest one paying Shs. 20,000, but a crucial opportunity for rising comedians trying to find their footing. Then came the familiar disruption: Sunny pulled out, claiming he was held up somewhere.
For Reign, that was a deal-breaker. No partner, no performance. But the event organizer wasn’t ready to let him go. He found a quick fix in Maulana, who was also on the lineup. The reasoning was almost comical in itself: Maulana was “a suitable substitute” because he was a fellow Muslim.
Reign hesitated, but one thing mattered, his pay. Once assured that his Shs 20,000 would remain untouched, he agreed.
The two took to the stage, not as a polished duo but as familiar faces from the same circuit. They had both been part of Comedy Files. They knew each other’s material, understood each other’s rhythm, and most importantly, trusted each other’s instincts.
“We talked about our jokes, and we killed the show,” Reign said during an interview on Galaxy TV.
It wasn’t just a good performance; it was electric. The kind that makes an audience lean forward, laugh harder, and remember names. From that point on, there was no looking back.
What started as a last-minute substitution evolved into one of Uganda’s most beloved comedy partnerships.
