Dancehall artist Ziza Bafana has ignited a heated conversation after delivering a blunt and controversial message directed at fellow star Sheebah Karungi.
His remarks that came in a video clip, laced with conviction and tradition, Bafana challenged what he perceives as a growing trend of women stepping into spaces he believes are inherently male-dominated. While acknowledging Sheebah’s star power, he insisted that there are boundaries that should not be crossed.
“What I require of you, my sister Sheebah, is that you are a star,” he said, before pivoting sharply. “But there is a way God created the world. A man is a man and a woman is a woman.”
His words didn’t stop there. In a tone that blended concern with authority, Bafana emphasized what he described as the natural order where women are expected to be “well-behaved, soft, understanding, and listening,” and men carry the burden of navigating the world’s hardships.
It’s a perspective rooted in tradition but one that clashes head-on with the image Sheebah has built over the years.
Known for her fierce independence and unapologetic confidence, Sheebah has long positioned herself as a symbol of female empowerment in Uganda’s music scene. From commanding stages to steering her own career, she has often blurred the lines that artists like Bafana are now trying to redraw.
Bafana’s assertion that “you can never be equal” and that women should avoid “competing with a man” feels, to many, like a direct challenge to everything Sheebah represents.
