For many politicians, a ministerial appointment is seen as the ultimate symbol of success, influence, and status. But for Minister of State for Youths and Children Affairs Balaam Barugahara, public office is merely an addition to a life he says was already financially secure long before politics came calling.
Speaking during an interview with UBC, Balaam dismissed the notion that his success or relevance is tied to government positions, insisting that he built his wealth independently through business.
“I don’t mind if I am not a minister or a Member of Parliament,” Balaam said confidently. “I am a successful businessman. I am not a millionaire; I am a billionaire.”
The businessman-turned-politician portrayed himself as someone who entered politics from a position of strength rather than dependence, emphasizing that his businesses were already thriving before he joined government.
According to Balaam, taking on a ministerial role did not interrupt or weaken his private ventures because his companies continued operating successfully behind the scenes.
“I became a minister when I was already a billionaire,” he explained. “Even when I am a minister, the companies are running. I never signed out of the companies.”
Balaam further highlighted his contribution to the economy, pointing to the taxes and statutory obligations his businesses continue to pay, including rental tax, PAYE, NSSF contributions, and import duties.
His remarks appeared aimed at reinforcing his image not just as a politician, but as a major businessman and taxpayer whose influence extends beyond government corridors.
