Inside the rise of Quiz Night culture in Kampala’s social scene – Sqoop

Kampala’s growing appetite for calm, experience-driven nightlife was once again evident on Monday evening as Black & White whisky hosted another Quiz Night activation at El Nivel Bar and Restaurant in Kiwatule.

Set against a relaxed and inviting ambiance, the night attracted a largely middle-aged crowd seeking a more laid-back yet mentally engaging way to unwind. With soft, easygoing music setting the tone, the atmosphere encouraged conversation, concentration, and social connection.

Directed by Quiz Master Pius Arinawe, the evening unfolded through multiple competitive rounds that tested participants’ knowledge across diverse topics. Teams battled it out for rewards, with cocktail pitchers awarded to winners of each round and a bottle of Black & White whisky reserved for the overall champions.

Riding on the global buzz from the recently concluded Met Gala, the first round proved particularly engaging as participants were challenged to identify celebrities based on their iconic red carpet looks. The round energized the room early in the night while also testing pop culture awareness.

To maintain competitiveness and fairness, tied teams were given exclusive face-off questions, a format that heightened tension and kept participants fully engaged throughout the experience.

One of the night’s standout moments came during a tie-breaker between Team Tokyo Revengers and Team Ballads. The deciding question, “Diamonds are measured in carats. How many carats make up one diamond?” sparked debate and excitement across the room. With answers ranging from 100 to 5,000 carats, the latter secured the win, earning a celebratory Black & White cocktail pitcher.

The continued success of these quiz nights highlights a noticeable shift in consumer preferences, with more people moving away from loud, fast-paced partying and leaning into experiences that combine entertainment with interaction, learning, and social bonding.

Quiz nights, in particular, offer a unique blend of relaxation and stimulation, what many now refer to as “edutainment.”

This growing trend is reflected in increasing turnout at each edition, as returning teams bring friends along and new participants join in, drawn by the promise of a different kind of night out. Quiz nights continue to be hosted across various outlets in Kampala.
