Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, is celebrating 13 years since his appointment as Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom.
Taking to his official social media platforms, Mayiga reflected on the journey since Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II entrusted him with the kingdom’s top administrative office, highlighting several milestones and transformation initiatives achieved during his tenure.
In his message, Mayiga emphasized that one of his earliest and most impactful initiatives was the Ettoffali campaign, a kingdom-wide mobilization drive aimed at promoting self-reliance and mindset change among Baganda.
Through the Ettoffali initiative, the kingdom raised approximately Shs10 billion, although Mayiga noted that the main objective went beyond fundraising and focused on encouraging citizens to believe in their collective ability to develop Buganda using local effort and resources.
Over the past 13 years, the Katikkiro cited several achievements, including strengthening administrative systems at Bulange and across kingdom institutions to improve efficiency and governance.
He also highlighted the reconstruction of the Kasubi Royal Tombs, restoration works that followed the devastating 2010 fire, as well as infrastructure development projects such as the construction of Masengere buildings.
Mayiga further pointed to major milestones in media and partnerships, including the establishment of BBS Terefayina, the Buganda Kingdom’s television station, and attracting strategic development partners and investors who have supported projects in areas like Kigo and Ssentema, alongside corporate partners such as Airtel and Centenary Bank.
Health advocacy has also been a central pillar of his leadership, with the Kabaka positioned as a continental champion in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Under his administration, Buganda has intensified cultural and community mobilization programs such as the Kabaka Birthday Run, now one of Africa’s largest public runs, and the popular Masaza Cup football tournament, widely followed across East Africa.
Mayiga also credited the kingdom’s continued support toward creatives, including musicians, instrumentalists, songwriters, and dancers, as well as education initiatives spearheaded through the Kabaka Education Fund, which has supported thousands of learners across all academic levels.
Economic empowerment programs like Emmwanyi Terimba and cooperative savings schemes, including PEWOSA SACCOs, were also highlighted as key efforts aimed at fighting poverty and improving household incomes among Buganda subjects.
In addition, Mayiga noted ongoing efforts to promote Buganda culture and heritage, celebrating the growing global recognition of the Luganda language and traditions.
