Jinja North Division Member of Parliament, Hussein Muyonjo, popularly known as Swengere, has assured constituents that he will not follow the path of past legislators who failed to meet public expectations.
Speaking to journalists shortly after being sworn in to the 12th Parliament, the legislator emphasized that he is determined to prove wrong those who doubt his leadership ability, particularly critics who question comedians transitioning into politics.
Hon. Swengere noted that the skills gained from comedy have prepared him for public service, stressing that understanding people’s struggles and connecting with them emotionally is key to effective leadership.
If they think comedians cannot deliver anything important, then they are missing a big point, or they have yet to understand us better.
There is nothing as hard as making someone laugh or happy. If I can make someone happy, then discussing issues like youth unemployment, poor roads, unsafe water, healthcare challenges, and the rule of law becomes everyday work that we are ready to handle.
He acknowledged that skepticism from voters is understandable, citing previous leaders who disappointed their electorates. However, he urged residents to remain hopeful.
They are right to think that way because many past leaders did not do enough and ended up disappointing voters. This time, I want my voters to stay hopeful that good leaders still exist, though sometimes finding them requires patience. I promise they will witness good leadership from some of us they doubt.
Swengere also spoke about Uganda’s entertainment industry, describing it as a sector capable of generating significant revenue but one he believes has faced challenges due to government policies.
The industry I come from generates a lot of money, but it has often been suffocated. I don’t expect any new money to shift me from my mission. If money were my goal, I wouldn’t be here today.
The MP reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Jinja North and tackling key community issues affecting ordinary citizens.
