Kampala – The 12th Parliament of Uganda has moved closer to full composition after medical doctor and legislator Michael Iga Bukenya was officially sworn in today as the Member of Parliament for Bukuya County.
Bukenya, who missed the main three-day swearing-in ceremony held between May 13 and 15, 2026, took the oath of allegiance before parliamentary leadership at Parliament House in Kampala this morning.
With his swearing-in, the total number of MPs in the 12th Parliament now stands at 528, leaving only one seat vacant — the Kalangala District Woman MP position.
Parliamentary sources indicated that Bukenya’s delayed induction resulted from administrative and logistical challenges following the 2026 general elections. The soft-spoken legislator, who comes from a medical background, becomes the last directly elected MP to formally join the House.
Photos from the ceremony showed Bukenya taking the oath at the parliamentary podium alongside officials before interacting with colleagues inside and outside Parliament.

The near-completion of the 12th Parliament comes at a critical moment as the House prepares to embark on major legislative business, including scrutiny of the national budget and consideration of key policy reforms.
Political observers believe Bukenya’s experience in the medical field could prove valuable, particularly in parliamentary committees dealing with health, education, and social services — sectors that remain central to public debate and national development priorities.
His arrival also completes the induction of nearly all elected representatives, paving the way for Parliament to fully settle into committee work, oversight responsibilities, and legislative processes in the new term.
