The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), under the leadership of Executive Director Nyombi Thembo, has launched an initiative aimed at improving the welfare of Uganda’s ageing legendary musicians by supporting them to live more dignified lives.
One of the first beneficiaries of the program is 81-year-old music icon Hadijah Namale, whose music career dates back to the early 1970s.
Namale is fondly remembered for classic songs such as Mukulike Omwaka, Mpadise Ebaluwa, and Nnatege, among others.
Besides singing, she was also a talented instrumentalist who mastered several traditional musical instruments.
Namale’s journey into music reportedly began playfully at her home before her talent attracted attention from other performers.
She later joined a Congolese band in Bwaise, where she refined her artistry and learned to perform in Lingala and French, expanding her musical versatility.
Currently residing in Tteketwe village in Buwama, Mpigi District, the veteran artiste lives with her daughter, Nnalongo Jamila Nansubuga.
Despite her celebrated legacy, Namale faces significant challenges, including inadequate housing and health complications such as joint and leg pain, dizziness, and occasional hunger.
Although advanced in age, she says she still has the strength to work and appealed to well-wishers for support to start a small income-generating venture like charcoal selling or a retail shop.
She also called upon musicians who remake her songs to consider sending her royalties so she can benefit from the music she composed.
While visiting the legendary singer, Nyombi Thembo revealed that UCC plans to facilitate her medical treatment at CORSU Rehabilitation Hospital, a facility known for specialized orthopedic and rehabilitation care.
He further pledged to secure a home for Namale with rental units near her residence to provide her with a sustainable source of income.
Since she experiences joint and leg pain, we shall take her for treatment and also ensure she has a permanent income. No middleman will be involved.
Musicians Matiya Luyimi and Dan Mugula praised Hadijah Namale for mentoring and encouraging them during the early stages of their careers, describing her as one of the pillars of Uganda’s music foundation.
Events promoter Juma Balunya also pledged support, promising to mobilize assistance for veteran artistes who never fully benefited from their musical contributions.
Plans are already underway to organize a special concert at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel gardens, where at least 21 legendary artists in similar circumstances are expected to perform and be celebrated.
