For years, Ugandan hip hop has thrived on competition.
Every rapper wants the crown. Every bar feels like a challenge. Every interview eventually circles back to the same question: who is truly carrying the culture? But every once in a while, someone says something so unexpected that it shifts the conversation completely.
That moment came when hip hop pioneer GNL Zamba openly declared fellow rapper Fefe Bussi the “undisputed current Hip Hop king” during a recent podcast appearance. And perhaps what surprised many most was not just what he said, but how he said it.
There was no bitterness. No rivalry. No sense of a veteran reluctantly passing the torch. Instead, GNL sounded genuinely impressed.
“I don’t have any problem calling another man king while I am king too,” he said, before offering one of the strongest public endorsements a Ugandan rapper has received in recent years.
“Nobody has done what he has done. Nobody has packed a stadium like that, yet he has stayed true to the culture.” According to GNL, Feffe Bussi has managed to accomplish something many rappers struggle to balance, mainstream success without sacrificing authenticity.
While some artists become commercially bigger at the cost of abandoning the roots of hip hop, GNL believes Feffe has managed to grow his audience while remaining firmly grounded in rap culture.
“Feffe Bussi has brought freestyle to a new level that even people who have been in the industry for fifteen years can’t do,” he added. The veteran rapper particularly praised Feffe’s ability to elevate freestyle rap into a spectacle powerful enough to draw crowds and command mainstream attention.
For GNL, what makes Feffe’s rise even more remarkable is how he transformed battle rap energy into commercial success, something few rappers in Uganda have managed to achieve at such scale. “He has done it with a battle song; he has brought it with a concert,” GNL said.
The remarks are likely to fuel fresh debate among hip hop fans, especially in an industry where titles like “king” are often heavily contested.
But coming from one of Uganda’s most respected rap pioneers, the endorsement carries unusual weight.
And whether fans agree or not, one thing seems clear: Feffe Bussi’s place in the current hip hop conversation is becoming harder to ignore.
