How Wizkid Changed African Music Forever, According to Nasty C

Long before Afrobeats became one of the world’s biggest music movements, Nasty C says one collaboration helped push the genre into global spaces.

The South African rapper recently praised Wizkid for the impact of his 2016 hit “One Dance” with Drake.

Speaking during a podcast interview, Nasty C described the song as a major turning point for African music internationally.

Wizkid and Drake collaboration on ‘One Dance’ opened the door for African artistes.

He explained that the success of the record changed the music industry so much that some rappers started moving away from hip-hop and into Afrobeats because the genre had become more profitable.

“One Dance,” which also featured British singer Kyla, later made history as the first song to reach one billion streams on Spotify.

The song remains widely regarded as one of the records that helped introduce Afrobeats to a larger global audience.
