When Arsenal F.C. finally ended their painful 22-year wait for a Premier League title, celebrations erupted among fans worldwide, including in Uganda where the club enjoys one of its most passionate followings.
But amid the excitement, one reaction stood out and quickly became comedy gold.
Comedian Reign had publicly declared that if Arsenal lifted the trophy, he would join Uganda’s ruling political party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Now, just weeks later, the comedian appears to be softening his stance and doing it in classic Reign fashion.
Speaking during an interview with The Truth Media, Reign laughed off the earlier declaration, joking that he was not exactly in the best frame of mind when he made it.
“The doctors said I wasn’t mentally stable. That it wasn’t me speaking,” he joked.
Still, before Arsenal fans could accuse him of dodging his promise altogether, Reign quickly introduced a fresh condition.
“What I am actually saying is that when Arsenal takes the Champions League, then I will wear an NRM T-shirt and move around town,” he said.
The comedian had initially made the now-viral declaration during his performance at the Zzina Festival, at a time when Arsenal’s title charge was gaining momentum and fans were daring to believe again.
Like many football-fuelled promises made in moments of excitement, the statement was met with laughter and disbelief, with many assuming it was simply another exaggerated fan reaction.
For now, however, Reign seems to have found a temporary escape route, shifting the promise from domestic glory to Europe’s biggest football prize.
And considering Arsenal have never won the UEFA Champions League, some fans might argue the comedian has bought himself plenty of time.
