Three people died and four others were injured last night after a Toyota Hiace carrying URA officials hit an elephant crossing the road in Murchison Falls National Park.
The crash happened around 8:00 p.m. on Arua Road in Nwoya District. The van, registration UA 20121AA, was carrying seven URA staff who were driving from Arua city back to Kampala after official duty.
Police say the driver knocked a crossing elephant and lost control of the vehicle. Three occupants died at the scene. The other four, including the driver, were injured.
Officers rushed the injured to Kiryandongo Hospital for first aid. They were later transferred to Kampala for further treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Anaka Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura urged drivers to be extra careful when driving through national parks and wildlife areas, especially at night.
“Motorists should strictly observe speed limits to avoid such incidents,” Kananura said.
