Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr. Diana Atwine, has called for the suspension of all concerts, marathons, and other unstructured public events, including Arsenal celebrations, over the growing Ebola threat.
Dr. Atwine explained that events lacking proper organization and crowd-control measures expose attendees to a high risk of contracting Ebola.
She warned that any organizer who proceeds to hold such events will face arrest and prosecution under the Public Health Act for endangering people’s lives.
“Events that don’t have structured ways like the recent Arsenal celebrations you witnessed are closed. We won’t allow them. If you’re an organizer and you go ahead and hold them, there is a law under the Public Health Act, we will arrest you and take you to court and be charged because you put the lives of people at risk.”
The directive comes amid the continued spread of Ebola, which has prompted the temporary closure of the Ugandan border with Democratic Republic of the Congo to non-essential travelers for four weeks.
Health workers and other authorized cross-border movements have, however, been exempted.
Schools in border districts will remain open but will operate under strict Ministry of Health SOPs.
Students entering from the DRC will have their temperatures monitored for 21 days as part of the preventive measures.
