There are moments after loss when memories stop feeling like stories and begin feeling like treasures.
For singer Weasel Manizo, born Douglas Mayanja, the death of his elder brother Humphrey Mayanja has reopened a vault of memories, moments shaped by music, sacrifice, family and the kind of brotherhood that fame could never replace.
And among the many memories now replaying in his mind, one stands out more vividly than sold-out concerts, celebrity treatment or luxurious hotel stays in America.
A brother’s home.
In an emotional tribute shared on social media, Weasel revealed that during the peak of the iconic music duo Radio and Weasel, he and the late Mowzey Radio often skipped expensive hotel bookings arranged by promoters in the United States just to stay with Humphrey.
“We used to skip hotel bookings from US promoters just to stay at my big brother’s home. Rest well champ,” Weasel wrote.
The message immediately struck an emotional chord with fans online, not because of grand words or dramatic declarations, but because of its simplicity.
Behind the statement sits a deeply familiar truth many families understand: sometimes, the greatest comfort is not luxury, but home.
At the height of Radio and Weasel’s success, international tours came with celebrity privileges. Promoters organised accommodation, expensive hotels, comfortable rooms and all the prestige expected of successful artistes travelling abroad.
Yet according to Weasel, there were moments when none of that mattered.
Not because the hotels were inadequate.
Not because promoters failed in their arrangements.
But because Humphrey’s house offered something luxury never could, familiarity, warmth and the comfort of family in a foreign land.
For many Ugandans living abroad or visiting distant countries, the feeling is instantly recognisable. No matter how beautiful the hotel room, there is something grounding about hearing familiar voices, eating homemade food or simply existing in a space where you do not feel like a visitor.
And perhaps that is what made Humphrey’s home special.
To Weasel, it was not just a place to sleep between performances.
It was sanctuary.
A reminder of where they came from before fame arrived with flashing cameras and international schedules.
Humphrey’s death has cast a shadow over the Mayanja family, with tributes continuing to pour in from friends, relatives and members of Uganda’s entertainment industry.
But through grief, memories like these continue to paint a picture of a bond rooted not in status or success, but in loyalty and love.
