Uganda’s famous dance group, Triplets Ghetto Kids, are still enjoying the global spotlight after appearing in the official FIFA World Cup song Dai Dai by Shakira and Burna Boy. But according to their manager, Dauda Kavuma, the opportunity was months in the making.
Speaking about how the collaboration came to life, Kavuma revealed that it all started with a viral dance challenge the group created for a Shakira soundtrack linked to Zootopia. Their energetic performance quickly caught the attention of the Colombian superstar’s team.
“We had initially done a challenge for the Zootopia song that came out in the same movie. Her team commented, shared and appreciated it,” Kavuma explained.
What many people did not know, however, was that conversations between Shakira’s team and the Ugandan dancers had already begun long before the World Cup song was released.
“Afterwards, her team approached us and requested that we do a video. We went to Miami, all expenses paid for 12 people. By the time the challenge came out, we had already done the video, so everything was already in the pipeline,” he added.
The revelation highlights just how impressed Shakira’s camp was by the Ghetto Kids’ creativity and viral energy. Flying 12 people from Uganda to Miami with all expenses covered is no small investment, particularly for a dance group that started from the streets of Kampala.
For the Ghetto Kids, the collaboration marks yet another major milestone in a journey that has transformed them into one of Uganda’s biggest cultural exports. Over the years, the group has danced their way onto international stages, collaborated with global stars, and represented Uganda in some of the world’s biggest entertainment spaces.
Their appearance in Dai Dai only adds to their growing international résumé, proving once again that social media challenges are no longer just online trends, but can open doors to life-changing opportunities.
