The Uganda People’s Defence Forces has announced a national recruitment exercise running from July 20 to August 1, 2026, across all districts in the country. Col. Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, made the announcement through the Uganda Media Centre, outlining an unusually broad range of categories being sought — from general recruits fresh out of O-Level to specialist doctors, pilots, lawyers, and musicians.

General Recruits Age: 18–22 years. Must hold a Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) obtained in 2024 or 2025.
Regular Forces Must hold a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) earned in 2024 or 2025.
Engineers and Logistics Personnel Relevant bachelor’s degrees or diplomas with practical experience. The UPDF says this category is being prioritised to support the force’s growing operational and technical needs.
ICT Specialists Qualifications in information and communications technology. Specific requirements to be confirmed at district recruitment centres.
Aviation Professionals Qualifications including private or commercial pilot licences and aircraft maintenance certifications are among what is being sought in this category.
Health Professionals Medical officers, specialist doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and allied health professionals with valid practising licences are invited to apply. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required for eligible health categories.
Legal Practitioners Advocates with at least five years of legal practice are eligible to apply to support military justice and legal services within the force.
Graduate Teachers Bachelor’s degrees in science subjects with education, plus valid teaching certificates. Science education graduates are specifically being targeted.
Social Scientists and Humanists Age: 20–25 years. Bachelor’s degrees in relevant fields.
Sportsmen and Women Age: 18–30 years. Must have evidence of participation in national sporting events. Both male and female athletes are encouraged to apply.
Musicians Age: 18–24 years. Proven musical knowledge and skills required to join the military marching band and jazz live band.
What to Bring When You Show Up
Shortlisted applicants must present the following during the recruitment process:
- A handwritten application letter
- A recommendation letter from designated local leaders
- A valid national identity card
First: It is free. Recruitment into the UPDF does not cost anything. If anyone approaches you asking for money in exchange for recruitment assistance, report them immediately. Col. Magezi urged applicants to report any such individuals.
Second: Do not forge documents. Anyone who presents forged documents or engages in fraudulent activities during the recruitment process will be arrested and prosecuted under the law. No exceptions.
Col. Magezi specifically encouraged eligible women to apply across all relevant categories — a direct signal that the UPDF is actively seeking to diversify its intake beyond traditional demographics.
