Singer Karole Kasita has defended her presence at the burial of late dancer Hustle Quin after videos from the ceremony sparked debate on social media.
Hustle Quin, a member of Uganda’s dance fraternity, died in a tragic road accident, leaving friends, family and fellow entertainers mourning her untimely passing.
However, footage from the burial quickly went viral after mourners broke into dance as a tribute to the deceased, with some dancers performing to one of Karole Kasita’s songs while the coffin remained in the compound.
The videos generated mixed reactions online. While some people viewed the dancing as a fitting farewell for someone whose life revolved around dance, others criticized the scenes as inappropriate for a burial ceremony.
Amid the backlash, some social media users accused Karole Kasita of attending the funeral to perform, prompting the singer to publicly clarify the circumstances.
“So people think I left home to go for a burial gig? That’s insanity. Did you ever stop to think that we are family too?” she wrote on X.
Kasita explained that she had attended the burial to mourn alongside the dance community and had not planned to perform.
According to the singer, the decision to sing came after the presiding priest unexpectedly invited her to the front during the service.
“I was just caught in between something I too wasn’t aware of. The priest paused mass and called me up. I either had to sing or sing, if you know what I mean,” she added.
Her remarks have reignited discussion about the different ways people choose to grieve. For members of Uganda’s dance fraternity, dancing was seen by many as a heartfelt tribute to one of their own, while others maintained that funerals should remain strictly solemn occasions.
Despite the differing opinions, supporters of the late Hustle Quin have continued to celebrate her life and contributions to Uganda’s dance industry.
