The Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) on Wednesday announced a royalty distribution totaling UGX 216 million to its members.
At a presser held at their offices, the UPRS Chairman, Martin Nkoyoyo, revealed that the amount reflects the income collected from licensing and the usage of music by various users throughout the country.
We understand that many of our members have high expectations regarding their royalty earnings, and we recognize that for some rights holders, the amounts received may not fully represent the true value of their creative works.
We share your concerns and wish to reassure our members that both the Board and Management are committed to the same goal: to grow our collections, improve transparency, and ensure that each creator receives a fair and equitable share of the royalties generated from their music.
This distribution is an important milestone in the body’s ongoing journey to rebuild and strengthen the collective management system in Uganda.
“Despite our collections currently being below desirable levels, we are making significant strides to expand licensing coverage, enhance compliance among music users, strengthen enforcement, and ultimately increase revenues for future distributions,” Nkyoyoyo highlighted.
A critical issue in royalty distribution is the availability and quality of music usage data. Fair distribution is only achievable with reliable information on where, when, and how music is utilized.
Consequently, UPRS is dedicating substantial resources to improving monitoring systems, enhancing reporting mechanisms, and collaborating with stakeholders in the music ecosystem to ensure that distributions are increasingly data-driven, transparent, and reflective of actual music usage.
We want to assure our members that every collection made by UPRS is held in trust for rights holders. The Society remains dedicated to distributing royalties according to established policies and international collective management principles.
With the new developments, optimism about the future and confidence that the initiatives being implemented today will yield stronger collections, enhanced monitoring, and more meaningful royalty returns in the years to come continues to grow.
