Singer Nina Kakunda, known by her stage name Nina Roz, has reiterated her criticism of the government, arguing that it has not done enough to support the country’s music industry despite decades in power.
Speaking about her concerns, Nina Roz said she believes the government has failed to create a sustainable environment for musicians during its nearly four decades of leadership.
While acknowledging the recent financial support extended to the industry through the Uganda National Musicians Federation, she maintained that more meaningful intervention is still needed.
The government recently allocated Shs10 billion to the federation, a move aimed at supporting musicians and strengthening the creative industry.
However, Nina Roz questioned the intentions behind such interventions, arguing that support should have come much earlier.
“Why am I against the state? In my perception and belief, the government hasn’t done enough yet to support the music industry. That’s why it is not fair for them to come and fumble with the little we get unless there are hidden intentions in this. The government interventions, in my view, are not in good faith. It would have been good had they prepared for us from the beginning.”
The singer also explained her decision to leave the Uganda National Musicians Federation, revealing that she initially joined because she believed it would help unite artists and advance the interests of the industry.
According to Nina Roz, her outlook changed after she began questioning the federation’s direction and objectives.
She claimed that what started as a platform for unity gradually evolved into something she no longer felt aligned with.
She further noted that the increasing politicization of the music industry contributed to her decision to distance herself from the federation.
As a result, she chose to focus on building her personal brand and pursuing other business and professional ventures outside the organization.
Nina Roz remains one of the most outspoken voices in Uganda’s entertainment industry, frequently expressing her views on governance, artist welfare, and the future of the country’s creative sector.
