The spirit of meaningful conversation was alive once again on Friday evening as the eighth edition of Gilbey’s Hangouts brought people together at Old Tymerz Kafunda in Ntinda.
Held during Men’s Mental Health Month, the latest gathering focused on the emotional and psychological challenges many men face today, creating a safe environment for guests to share experiences and perspectives.
As the evening unfolded, attendees explored some of the factors contributing to mental health struggles among men. Economic pressures emerged as one of the key concerns, with several participants pointing to the increasing cost of living and the burden many men carry as providers.
One female participant observed that financial hardships are taking a significant toll on men’s wellbeing.
“Poverty is causing a lot of depression among men today. The rising cost of living and increasing prices of basic necessities are making it difficult for many men to fulfil their responsibilities, and that pressure affects their mental health,” she said.
Others highlighted the emotional demands that come with relationships, arguing that some men often prioritize keeping their partners happy while neglecting their own wellbeing.
The discussion later shifted towards the importance of emotional support, with participants encouraging women to become safe spaces for the men in their lives and to create environments where men feel comfortable expressing themselves.
According to Gilbey’s Brand Manager, Raymond Karama, the continued growth of the Hangouts reflects people’s desire for authentic human connection and conversations that resonate with everyday experiences.
“Gilbey’s Hangouts continues to bring people together in a way that feels genuine and relatable. We are seeing more people open up, share experiences and engage in conversations that matter. That sense of connection is what makes these gatherings special,” Karama said.
Throughout the evening, host Ronnie McVex invited first-time attendees to participate in the discussions, giving new voices an opportunity to contribute.
Among them was Jacinta, who attended the event for the first time and expressed her appreciation for the judgment-free atmosphere.
“I love the kiboozi and it’s so fulfilling having a real conversation without the need to be judged. I love it here and I’m regretting why I didn’t discover this sooner,” she said.
Reflecting on the evening, Ronnie McVex noted that Gilbey’s Hangouts has deliberately revived the culture of people giving each other their full attention in an era dominated by screens and distractions.
“Gilbey’s Hangouts is an open and free space that happens every Friday evening and welcomes everyone with open arms. People come here to have a good time together while engaging in genuine conversations that affect many of us in our daily lives. For a few moments, people put their phones down, listen, share and truly connect with one another. That is what Gilbey’s Hangouts is all about,” he said.
As the night came to an end, one thing remained clear: beyond the drinks and entertainment, Gilbey’s Hangouts has become a growing community where conversations matter and connections are built one story at a time.
