Selecta Jeff Warns DJs Against Building Careers on Favors

Selecta Jeff believes not all DJ careers stand on the same foundation.

In a post on X, the Ugandan DJ and music curator broke down what he described as the different categories of DJs operating in today’s entertainment industry, from those who thrive on networking and social media influence to others who benefit from controlling access to opportunities.

Yet the list was not really about DJs.

It was about what happens when a career depends on everything except the work itself.

Among the categories he identified were the “Barter DJ,” who builds opportunities through exchanges, the “Gatekeeper DJ,” whose influence comes from controlling access, and the “Trend DJ,” whose popularity depends on staying hot.

At the other end of the spectrum sat the “Relentless DJ.”

No gatekeeping. No favors. No shortcuts. Just years of improving, creating, showing up, and staying in the game.

For Selecta Jeff, that distinction appears to matter more than any other.

He concluded the post with a warning about building a career around advantages that may not always exist.

The uncomfortable truth: If your career depends on favors, it can disappear when the favors stop.
