Why Quiz Nights have become a weekly ritual for many Kampalans – Sqoop

Quiz nights have quietly become one of Kampala’s favourite ways to unwind after a long day, offering a mix of entertainment, learning and genuine human connection. What started as a simple trivia activity has evolved into a weekly ritual with a loyal following that faithfully shows up whenever it’s quiz o’clock.

On Thursday night, that growing community gathered at Revive Restaurant in Kololo for another edition of Black & White-powered Quiz Night. By the time the first question was asked, most people in the room had already battled through deadlines, meetings, traffic jams and the constant stream of notifications that define modern life.

Within minutes, however, the atmosphere had changed.

The stress of the day gave way to laughter, friendly arguments over answers, playful teasing among teammates and spirited competition. It is one of the most fascinating aspects of Kampala’s expanding quiz culture: people arrive carrying the weight of the day but leave feeling lighter, more connected and re-energised.

For many regular attendees, quiz night has become much more than entertainment. It is now a weekly ritual they genuinely look forward to.

In a city where workdays often stretch late into the evening and digital screens constantly compete for attention, these gatherings offer something increasingly rare — an opportunity to be fully present. Phones are put aside, conversations become more meaningful and, for a few hours, the only thing that matters is whether your team can identify a song from a five-second clip, remember the capital of a distant country or settle a heated debate over a seemingly simple question.

According to organisers, one thing has become increasingly clear over the months.

“People are no longer showing up simply to win prizes; they come for the people,” said Raymond Karama.

That sentiment resonates with many of the regulars.

“I always have busy days at the hospital, and by the end of the day my body and mind are completely exhausted,” said Calvin Mukiibi, a medical doctor. “I attend quiz nights as a way of washing away the day’s challenges and reconnecting with people.”

The sense of community is evident throughout the evening. Newcomers are quickly welcomed into conversations, regular attendees know one another by name and friendly rivalries have become part of the experience.

“Everyone is lively, welcoming and genuinely supportive,” said quiz master Matilda Kavuma. “We go beyond quiz night enjoyment and support each other’s businesses, celebrate birthdays and show up for one another.”

Perhaps that explains why quiz nights have become a permanent fixture on Kampala’s social calendar. What began as an activity for a handful of trivia enthusiasts has grown into a thriving culture embraced by young professionals, entrepreneurs, creatives and groups of friends looking for a meaningful way to unwind.

In a fast-moving city where many people spend most of their day behind screens, the quiz community is proving that sometimes the best therapy comes in the form of a question, a team and a room full of people eager to learn, laugh and belong.
