Veteran singer Catherine Kusasira has boldly declared that she and Cindy Sanyu occupy the top spot among Uganda’s female musicians, citing their ability to excel both vocally and on stage.
Speaking in a recent interview, Kusasira argued that being a successful artist involves much more than producing popular songs. According to her, stage presence, confidence, audience connection and overall presentation are equally important qualities that distinguish exceptional performers from ordinary singers.
She maintained that while Uganda has many talented female musicians, only a few can effectively combine singing and live performance.
“Without exaggerating, the best female musicians who can both sing and perform are Cindy and Catherine Kusasira. I am a singer and a performer, and so is Cindy. Even appearance matters,” she said.
Kusasira noted that some artists may have good music but struggle to replicate the same energy when performing live before audiences.
The singer also shared her thoughts on some of her fellow female artists. Although she praised Grace Nakimera’s talent, she revealed that she would place her outside the top three in her personal rankings.
She also commended Mary Bata for her singing and stage abilities but ranked her lower on the list.
Kusasira insisted that her extensive catalogue of hit songs and years of experience support her claim of being among the country’s greatest female artists.
“I don’t want to continue giving numbers, but just know that it’s me and Cindy at the top. I have hit songs and we tie,” she said.
