A friend posts pictures from a fancy brunch. Another is traveling. Someone else just bought a new phone. Before you know it, you are wondering whether you are falling behind in life.
For many young people, social media has turned everyday life into a highlight reel competition. We constantly see the best moments from other people’s lives, making it easy to believe everyone is having more fun, making more money, or achieving more success than we are.
The problem is that FOMO often pushes people into making decisions they cannot comfortably afford. Some spend money they do not have just to keep up with trends. Others attend events they are not interested in simply because everyone else is going. Some even feel pressured to create a version of themselves online that is not entirely real.
What we rarely see are the struggles behind the photos. The person on vacation may be stressed about finances. The entrepreneur celebrating a business win may have faced months of setbacks. The perfect couple posting cute pictures may still have disagreements like everyone else.
Life is not a race, and there is no universal timeline for success. Everyone’s journey looks different.
Instead of focusing on what you are missing, it can be far more rewarding to appreciate what is already happening in your own life.
The next time social media makes you feel left out, remember this: you are comparing your behind-the-scenes reality with someone else’s highlight reel. That is never a fair comparison.
The best moments in life are not always the ones that get posted online. Sometimes they are the ones you simply get to experience for yourself.
