Col. Edith Nakalema has shared her views on raising children born outside marriage, acknowledging that while the situation may be difficult for many families, the children should never be blamed for circumstances beyond their control.
She explained that the real issue lies with the parents, not the innocent children, urging spouses to put aside resentment and allow such children to build relationships with their paternal relatives.
Speaking on the matter, Nakalema said that if a child born outside marriage expresses a desire to know their clan members or siblings, the wife in the home should find peace within herself and allow the father to introduce the child to their family.
To be sincere, it is not easy to raise a child born outside marriage, but there is one principle we must all agree on—the child has no problem. The problem is with the parents. Nakalema further noted that stepchildren can sometimes prove to be even more caring and appreciative than biological children, stressing that people should not judge them based on how they were born.
By the way, understand this too: you can have a stepchild who treats you even better than your own children because I have seen it happen before. I don’t encourage children being born outside marriage, but when it happens, give them room and a chance.
She concluded by encouraging parents to embrace such children with love, listen to them, and make them feel accepted within the family.
“The children are always innocent. If possible, bring that child closer to you, sit them down, listen to their opinions, and understand them better.”
