For Pretty Banks, the conversation around her collaborations has started much earlier than she expected.
Despite enjoying a steady rise in Uganda’s music industry, the fast-rising singer has so far released her biggest collaborations alongside Ray G and Crysto Panda. That has left some fans wondering why a fellow female artist has yet to appear on her catalogue.
Pretty Banks believes those assumptions overlook one important detail: she is still building that catalogue.
Appearing on Sanyuka UnCut, the “Insido” hitmaker explained that two released collaborations are hardly enough to define the artists she wants to work with, insisting it is too early to suggest she deliberately favours male collaborators.
I have literally only released two projects so far, one with Ray G and one with Crysto Panda. I have not been in the industry long enough for people to think that way. I have songs with female artists coming up. I have a lot of songs with women.
In her view, the absence of female collaborations reflects timing rather than preference.
While her released collaborations feature male artists, she says several songs with female artistes are already complete and waiting for the right time to be released.
That openness to working with women became even clearer when the discussion turned to Sheebah Karungi.
Pretty Banks described the former Team No Sleep (TNS) star as one of her favourite Ugandan female artists and admitted she would gladly share a song with her, even if she stopped short of calling it a dream collaboration.
It is not like a dream dream, but like a wish. She is one of my favourite Ugandan female artistes.
For now, Pretty Banks is content to let her catalogue grow before people judge the company she keeps in the studio.
If her upcoming releases arrive as planned, the question of why she has not collaborated with female artists may soon answer itself.
