Singer Ronald Alimpa has been released after spending more than a month in custody following his arrest over an altercation with security personnel ahead of a concert in Kasanje.
Videos circulating online showed the Lusuku Lwa Cement hitmaker leaving prison in the company of friends and supporters who had gathered to welcome him. Among those present were veteran Kadongo Kamu singer Mamuli Katumba and fellow musician Record Ella Butida.
Alimpa’s arrest stemmed from an incident that reportedly occurred after he organized a concert in Kasanje without obtaining the necessary security clearance.
According to reports, security officers intervened on the day of the event and informed the singer that the show could not proceed as planned. Alimpa allegedly insisted that the concert would go ahead, reportedly telling the officers that his popularity would not stop him from performing.
The disagreement is said to have escalated into a physical confrontation between the singer and the officers.
Police further alleged that during the scuffle, Alimpa attempted to grab one of the officers’ firearms. The allegations formed part of the case that led to his detention.
There were also claims that the singer was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident. However, his manager dismissed those allegations, maintaining that they were untrue.
Details surrounding the terms of Alimpa’s release have not yet been made public.
