The 2026 BET Awards ended on a disappointing note for Nigerian music fans after the country’s nominees failed to win a single award despite entering the ceremony with multiple nominations.
Wizkid, Burna Boy, Asake and Tems all missed out in their respective categories at the awards, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on June 29.
Tems, who received three nominations, lost Best Female R&B/Pop Artist to SZA, Best Collaboration to Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s Luther, and Video of the Year to Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us. Wizkid and Asake lost Best Group to Clipse, while Burna Boy also missed out in Best Collaboration.
The results quickly sparked discussion on social media, with some fans questioning whether African artists face an uphill battle when competing in general categories dominated by American acts.
Others saw the nominations differently.
They argued that competing alongside some of the biggest names in global music reflects how far Afrobeats has come and shows that African artists are now viewed as equals rather than being confined to regional categories.
The discussion also revived calls for stronger recognition of African talent at major international award shows. While BET previously recognized African artists in dedicated categories, recent ceremonies have increasingly featured them in mainstream categories instead.
Supporters of that approach believe it promotes greater global recognition. Critics argue it can make it harder for African artists to convert nominations into wins.
Regardless of the outcome, the presence of Wizkid, Burna Boy, Asake and Tems among the nominees highlighted the continued global influence of Nigerian music.
Afrobeats remains one of the world’s fastest-growing genres, with Nigerian artists regularly topping charts, selling out arenas and collaborating with some of the biggest names in international music.
