Naira Ali has challenged what she sees as the growing culture of DJs relying on viral songs instead of mastering the craft behind the decks.
Writing on Facebook, the United States-based Ugandan Afro-soul singer argued that playing songs because they are trending on YouTube or TikTok is not enough to earn someone the title of DJ.
She said the profession demands much more, including the ability to mix, build playlists, discover unique music and create an experience that goes beyond pressing play.
Naira Ali’s remarks struck a chord with many followers who shared her concerns about the state of DJing.
Others were far less sympathetic, questioning her music career and comparing her with other Ugandan female artists as the debate spilled into the comments section.
