The Truth About Cheating: It Never “Just Happens”

By Kasemire Christina Mulinde

We have all heard the excuse before: “It just happened.” As if cheating is something that falls out of the sky like rain. But let us be honest, it does not.

Cheating is not one accidental moment. It is a series of deliberate choices.

You replied to the message.

You entertained the flirting.

You agreed to meet up.

You deleted the chats.

You lied about where you were.

You hid your phone when your partner walked into the room.

None of those things happened by accident.

Yet despite all of those conscious decisions, people still describe cheating as though it simply happened.

Somewhere along the way, we have started treating cheating like it is an unavoidable consequence of being unhappy in a relationship.

We were going through a rough patch.”

They were not giving me enough attention.”

We had been arguing a lot.

Yes, relationships can be messy. They can be frustrating, lonely, and exhausting. But here is the thing: plenty of people go through difficult seasons without betraying the person they are with.

Being unhappy in a relationship is not a free pass to be dishonest.

There is always a better option.

If you have fallen out of love, say so.

If you have checked out emotionally, admit it.

If you want to be with someone else, end the relationship first.

Yes, it is uncomfortable, and it will probably hurt someone. But it is still kinder than making them question their worth because you did not have the courage to walk away.

Cheating is not just about a kiss or spending the night with someone else. It is about broken promises. It is about betrayal. It is about looking someone in the eyes while knowing you are hiding a version of yourself they do not know exists.

And once trust is broken, rebuilding it is one of the hardest things two people can try to do. Some relationships survive it. Others do not.

The irony is that people often cheat to avoid one difficult conversation, only to create a hundred more.

Suddenly, there are lies to remember, stories to keep straight, messages to delete, locations to explain, and excuses to invent.

That sounds far more exhausting than simply saying, “I do not think this relationship is working anymore.

Honesty is hard, but deception is harder.

If you are done, be done.

Do not keep someone around simply because you do not want to be the bad guy.

In trying to avoid heartbreak, you often end up causing even more of it.
