Music legend Bonnie Tyler, the unmistakable voice behind the timeless hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has died at the age of 75.
The Welsh singer passed away in Portugal after complications following emergency intestinal surgery, bringing to a close a career that spanned more than five decades and produced some of the biggest power ballads in music history.
News of Tyler’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment world.
Fellow musicians, actors and public figures celebrated both her extraordinary voice and the warmth she brought to those who knew her.
Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, who revealed that Tyler was married to her cousin, remembered the late singer as an incredible talent whose infectious sense of humour lit up every room.
Rod Stewart praised her distinctive raspy voice, while Bryan Adams thanked her for recording his song “Straight From the Heart.”
Kevin Bacon, Sir Cliff Richard and Katrina Leskanich were among the many stars who also paid tribute.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler rose to international fame in the late 1970s with “It’s a Heartache.”
She cemented her place in music history in 1983 when “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” written and produced by Jim Steinman, topped charts around the world and became one of the defining songs of the decade.
She followed that success with another enduring anthem, “Holding Out for a Hero.”
Tyler’s signature husky voice became one of the most recognizable sounds in pop music.
Ironically, it developed after vocal cord surgery early in her career, when doctors advised her to rest her voice.
A scream during her recovery permanently altered her vocals, creating the distinctive sound that would later make her famous.
Although her biggest commercial success came in the 1980s, Tyler never stopped performing.
She released 18 studio albums, represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 and continued touring well into her seventies. In 2023, she received an MBE for her services to music.
Just months before her death, Tyler told interviewers she felt healthy and remained active, regularly doing Pilates and continuing to perform.
She was hospitalized earlier this year after suffering severe abdominal pain and later underwent emergency surgery. Despite showing signs of improvement during her recovery, she died unexpectedly this week.
