Prince Harry Shares the Family Ritual That Honors Princess Diana

Prince Harry has revealed the special family tradition he, his wife Meghan Markle, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, follow to honor the memory of his late mother, Princess Diana.

The Duke of Sussex revealed that the family marks both Diana’s birthday on July 1 and the anniversary of her death on August 31 by making a lemon drizzle cake together.

He shared the tradition while attending Scotty’s Summer Festival in Warwickshire, where he took part in a question-and-answer session with children and families supported by the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

When a teenager asked whether he did anything special to commemorate his mother’s birthday and death anniversary, Harry replied:

Yes, we do lemon drizzle cake.

He explained why the tradition means so much to his family.

I think traditions are really, really important. Especially when they are sweet.

Princess Diana died in August 1997 after suffering fatal injuries in a car crash in Paris. Harry was 12 years old at the time.

Harry has often spoken about the impact of losing his mother and how becoming a father has strengthened his connection to her memory.

During the festival, he also discussed grief with children who had lost parents, drawing on his own experiences of coping with loss from a young age.
