Media personality and singer Ahlam Ismail, known as Lamu, has opened up about the challenges she faced while pursuing a career in Uganda’s music industry, revealing that several setbacks behind the scenes derailed her journey.
Lamu, who was once signed to Mr. Eazi’s emPawa Africa record label, said there were issues that unfolded behind closed doors which she is still not ready to disclose in full.
There were definitely things going on behind the scenes that I can’t tell in full detail. Certain deals seemed clear-cut, but then the people we hoped would help us ended up letting us down.
She also revealed that she gave up a promising future in medicine to pursue music, a decision that came with immense pressure and personal struggles.
I came into music after dropping out of medical school. People had very high expectations of me, and along the way I developed self-doubt.
Lamu said she hopes her story serves as an inspiration to upcoming female artists, noting that although she has endured numerous challenges, she deliberately chose to protect herself by avoiding compromising situations.
I’m going to use myself as an example to every female artist out there. I’ve gone through a lot in this industry, but I can’t say I’ve suffered the most. I played it safe, and while that cost me some opportunities, it also saved me from certain things. The music industry is a very complicated business.
She further disclosed that her family never supported her decision to pursue music, describing herself as someone who has always chosen her own path.
My family didn’t support my career. I’m a rebel in everything I do. Look at my tattoos—I still want to go to the UN and Parliament with them.
