Maybe Relationships Are More Like Barbecue Than Fireworks

We have become a society that is impatient with almost everything.

We want food delivered in minutes. We skip advertisements. We watch movies at double speed. We scroll past videos if they do not capture our attention within the first three seconds. Waiting has become something to avoid rather than something to appreciate.

Perhaps that impatience has quietly followed us into our relationships.

We no longer seem interested in discovering people. We want to know everything immediately. We want deep conversations on the first date, daily phone calls by the second week, matching profile pictures by the third month, and conversations about forever before we have even experienced an ordinary Tuesday together.

Somewhere along the way, we stopped allowing relationships to unfold.

Instead, we began trying to force them to bloom.

The irony is that we spend so much energy chasing the emotional peak of a relationship that we forget what happens after we get there.

Every relationship has an exciting beginning. There are butterflies, mystery, and late-night conversations that somehow make five hours feel like five minutes. Those moments are beautiful, but they were never meant to last forever.

They are the spark, not the fire.

Yet many of us treat the spark as the destination. We rush toward maximum intensity as quickly as possible, and when life naturally settles into something quieter, we mistake peace for boredom.

Perhaps nothing is actually wrong.

Perhaps we have simply confused excitement with depth.

Depth takes time. Trust takes time. Understanding takes time. You cannot microwave familiarity. You cannot fast-forward loyalty. You cannot rush knowing how someone reacts when life stops being easy.

That is why relationships may be more like barbecue than fireworks.

Anyone can throw meat onto a blazing fire and cook the outside quickly. It may even look delicious. But anyone who loves barbecue knows the flavour is not created by heat alone.

It begins with the seasoning.

The spices need time to sink in. The meat needs time to rest. Then comes the slow fire, which patiently transforms everything that careful preparation has already begun. Great barbecue is not memorable because it cooks quickly. It is memorable because time changes it.

The best part is that none of this can be rushed. What makes the meal unforgettable is often the patience that nobody gets to see.

Maybe people are the same.

We rush into labels before we have built understanding. We rush into promises before we have experienced disappointment together. We rush into forever before we have survived an ordinary season of life.

Then we are surprised when everything begins to feel… ordinary.

But ordinary was never the enemy.

Ordinary is where real relationships are built. It is in the quiet evenings when there is nothing exciting to post online. It is in the conversations that do not change your life but slowly reveal who someone really is. It is in shared routines, small acts of kindness, and the comfort of silence that love quietly matures.

The strongest relationships are rarely the loudest.

They are simply the ones that were given enough time to marinate.

Maybe our generation does not have a relationship problem as much as it has a patience problem.

We have become so accustomed to instant gratification that we have forgotten some of life’s greatest experiences cannot be rushed.

Friendship cannot.

Trust cannot.

Respect cannot.

Love certainly cannot.

Perhaps we have been chasing intensity when we should have been cultivating consistency.

Because in the end, almost everything worthwhile in life follows the same rule.

The things that last the longest are usually the things that took the longest to become what they are.

Maybe relationships are no different.

Maybe, like great barbecue, they become richer, stronger, and more satisfying when they have been given enough time to marinate.
