Victoria University Vice Chancellor Lawrence Muganga believes artificial intelligence (AI) could open up new opportunities for musicians instead of threatening their careers.
Speaking on Sanyuka TV, Muganga encouraged artists to embrace AI, arguing that it can help them reach more listeners and increase their earnings.
To support his argument, he pointed to Segmento‘s hit song “Ayibambe.”
The song’s AI reimagined remix, which features a distinct, pitch-shifted female lead voice, quickly gained traction on TikTok, prompting the gospel singer to officially release it on streaming platforms.
There is an artist who is about to hold a concert. He has a great song called Ayibambe. The lyrics are very good, but the AI version is excellent. I believe even the song’s owner listens to the AI version more.
Muganga said the remix proves that AI can complement an artist’s original work instead of replacing it.
He urged musicians to embrace the technology with the same determination they showed while calling for stronger copyright protections.
Musicians recently fought for and secured amendments to the Copyright Act. They should look at AI with the same passion because it can make them even richer than they are today.
He added that artists do not have to choose between original music and AI-generated versions.
In his view, both can exist side by side and create additional income.
You can record your original song and people will still come to watch you perform. At the same time, you can create an AI version and distribute it on different platforms, as long as you make it clear that it was created with AI.
Muganga believes listeners are more interested in enjoying good music than debating how it was made.
As listeners, we do not really care whether it is AI or not. We simply enjoy the music, and the more people enjoy it, the more the artist earns.
His comments come ahead of Segmento Live in Concert, which Segmento Official will stage on August 22, 2026, at the Lugogo Hockey Grounds.
