Uganda Government introduces mandatory National Cleaning Day to boost public hygiene

Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja has officially announced the launch of the National Cleaning Days Initiative under the slogan, “A Clean Uganda is Everyone’s Responsibility.”

The nationwide exercise will officially commence this Saturday, July 25, 2026, and will thereafter be observed on every last Saturday of the month from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

During the three-hour period, all non-essential public activities will be suspended, with only emergency services and vehicles exempted.

According to the Prime Minister, all shops will remain closed and vehicles will stay off the roads during the exercise to enable Ugandans to participate in the mandatory community cleaning campaign.

The initiative is intended to promote cleanliness, improve hygiene, and help prevent the spread of diseases.

Nabbanja explained that the decision was reached during a Cabinet meeting held on August 11, 2025, chaired by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

She said the proposal has since gone through the necessary government processes before receiving official approval for implementation.

The inaugural National Cleaning Day will be officially launched in Kiti Zone, Kisenyi Parish, Kampala, with Vice President Jessica Alupo expected to serve as the chief guest.

The Prime Minister also cautioned the public against disregarding the directive, warning that noncompliance would be taken seriously.

She added that Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba (Gen. MK) is involved in supporting the implementation of the initiative, emphasizing that the exercise will be enforced across the country.

This Saturday, July 25, 2026, will mark Uganda’s first-ever National Cleaning Day, which the government hopes will become a lasting culture of civic responsibility and nation-building through collective efforts to keep the country clean.
