Chozen Blood did not keep the UGX 60,000 the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS) sent him as royalties.
The singer says he transferred the money straight back, arguing that UPRS should first explain how it calculates royalties before asking musicians to accept the payouts.
Speaking on Galaxy TV, Chozen Blood insisted the debate is bigger than the amount he received.
We need UPRS, and UPRS needs us as well. Let us not talk about the money because what they gave me was very little. When I received it, I sent it straight back to their account. I told them that if they had not prepared themselves to sit down and discuss the money with stakeholders, they should stop distributing it and first explain the process so that we understand how it works.
For Chozen Blood, the payment did not reflect the years he has invested in building his career.
He says he has spent 15 years in the industry, produced more than 100 music videos, and financed every project without the backing of a record label or manager.
A musician like me, who has been singing for 15 years, receives UGX 60,000 through Mobile Money? Bro, that is like jinxing my business. I am sorry to say. I have more than 100 videos on YouTube, and none of them cost less than UGX 10 million to shoot. Imagine how much I have invested, yet I have no record label and no manager. You cannot bring me loose change.
Chozen Blood joins a growing list of artists who have challenged UPRS over its latest royalty distribution.
Weasel publicly rejected his UGX 285,498 payout, Lydia Jazmine questioned receiving UGX 1.4 million, while Spice Diana, Karole Kasita, and Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) president Eddy Kenzo also criticised the payments.
UPRS has maintained that the payouts were royalties for the 2025 financial year and were calculated using registered works, ownership splits, and documented music usage rather than an artist’s popularity or production costs.
Despite his criticism, Chozen Blood says he is looking for dialogue, not conflict.
I do not want to sound bitter because I raised my concerns with them, and they promised to rectify the issues.
He also rejected claims that musicians need UPRS more than the society needs them.
The other sad thing I see is that some people are trying to create the impression that musicians need UPRS more. Personally, I believe we need each other.
