Chozen Blood rejects Shs60K UPRS royalties

Chozen Blood has stirred fresh controversy after revealing that he returned the Shs60,000 he received from the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS), saying the payout was too small to match his years of hard work.

Speaking during an interview with Galaxy TV’s Rewind entertainment team, the singer said he didn’t just reject the money… he sent it straight back, demanding that UPRS first explain how royalty payments are calculated before sending artists what he described as “questionable figures.”

“I received it and refunded it to their account. If they are not ready to openly explain the payment process to stakeholders, they should stop disbursing the money until everyone understands how it’s done,” Chozen Blood said.

Clearly frustrated, the singer argued that 15 years in the music industry cannot be rewarded with just Shs60,000, calling the amount an insult to his craft.

“I’ve been singing for 15 years. You can’t give me Shs60,000. It’s like cursing my business,” he added.

Chozen Blood also challenged UPRS to explain how they arrived at the figure, noting that his music catalogue speaks for itself. According to him, he has over 100 music videos on YouTube, with each one attracting at least 100,000 views, making the payout even harder to understand.

His remarks come just days after fellow musicians Weasel, Spice Diana and Lydia Jazmine publicly confirmed receiving royalty payments from UPRS, sparking widespread debate among fans and industry players.

The singer also called on UPRS to strengthen its communication with artists, saying transparency is the only way musicians will trust the royalty distribution system.

“We need each other. They shouldn’t make it seem like we need them more. Let’s get professional public relations officers,” he said.

With more artists questioning how royalties are shared, the pressure is mounting on UPRS to break its silence and provide a clear formula behind the payouts.
