Veteran musician Lord Fred Sebatta has expressed his willingness to collaborate with the new generation of artists on both fresh projects and revamped versions of his classic songs.
However, Sebatta says such collaborations must be guided by the recently amended Copyright and Neighbouring Rights law to ensure all parties receive their rightful share of royalties generated from the music.
The celebrated singer, who was crowned ‘Star of Africa’ in 1996/97, noted that many creatives are still unfamiliar with how the copyright law works despite its enactment.
He believes the industry needs comprehensive education on the legislation so that it can be effectively implemented.
According to Sebatta, a proper understanding of the law will help artists negotiate fairly, protect their creative works, and build mutually beneficial partnerships.
I’m open to working with the current breed of artists, whether on my old music or on new compositions.
But there are certain things that must be followed, especially the amended Copyright and Neighbouring Rights law that was enacted.
Many people still don’t understand it, and I believe it should be thoroughly taught to creatives so it can be properly implemented.
Once everyone understands it, we can sit down, agree on the terms, and work together fairly.
