Three people have been killed and 11 others injured after a commuter taxi rammed into a trailer at Kakira Junction along the Jinja-Iganga Highway in the early hours of Thursday.
Police have attributed the incident to reckless driving caused the deadly crash, although investigations are still ongoing.
The victims died on the spot, while the injured were rushed to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.
Hospital sources said seven of the survivors are fighting for their lives after suffering severe head injuries, while the remaining victims are in stable condition.
Kiira Regional Police spokesperson James Mubi said the bodies were taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
The damaged taxi is also being inspected to determine whether it was roadworthy before the accident.
The latest tragedy adds to Uganda’s growing list of fatal road crashes, which continue to claim dozens of lives every month despite repeated road safety campaigns.
Just two days ago, fourteen people died and four others were badly injured at Lwera Swamp on Kampala- Masaka Highway at Kamunga Trading Centre in Kalungu District, after a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration UA 662AQ, and a Sino truck, registration UBS 040F, which was transporting sand collided.
The Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson Kasirye Twaha said that all 14 victims who died on the spot were passengers in the taxi.
The crash also left four other people injured, two from the taxi and two from the truck. They were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Uganda recorded 26,044 road traffic crashes in 2025, compared to 25,107 crashes in 2024, an increase of about 3.7%, according to the Annual Crime Report.
Out of the 26,044 crashes: 4,602 were fatal crashes, 13,563 were serious crashes, 7,879 were minor crashes, 5,383 people were killed in road crashes in 2025, up from 5,144 deaths in 2024. 18,444 people sustained serious injuries in 2025, compared to 17,013 in 2024. 3,668 people suffered minor injuries in 2025, compared to 3,651 in 2024.
