Davido has paid tribute to P-Square for inspiring his musical ambitions and helping him believe that African artists could compete with the biggest names in the world.
During a recent interview with the BBC, Davido looked back at his school days and recalled how much he admired Peter and Paul Okoye’s international achievements.
For the young Davido, P-Square’s collaborations with major American stars represented something much bigger than individual hit songs.
They showed him that African musicians could build genuine relationships within the global music industry.
P-Square inspired me. I used to tell my friends in school about how they were two African artistes who had a song with Snoop Dogg and were friends with Kanye West.
Davido said P-Square’s ability to break international barriers encouraged young Nigerian artists to think beyond Africa and pursue bigger opportunities.
The duo’s influence became particularly significant as Nigerian music continued expanding internationally, eventually creating space for artists such as Davido, Wizkid and Rema to reach global audiences.
P-Square, made up of twins Peter and Paul Okoye, remain among the most influential groups in African music history.
For Davido, however, their legacy carries a personal meaning.
Before he became an international Afrobeats superstar himself, he was one of the young Nigerians watching P-Square and imagining what could be possible.
