When Should a Musician Know It’s Time to Change the Tune?

A hit song can make you famous, but it cannot guarantee you a lifetime career.

There comes a time in every musician’s career when they have to ask themselves a difficult question: “Is music still my biggest opportunity, or is it time to build something else?”

This does not mean the artist was never talented. Sometimes, audiences simply move on. Tastes change, new sounds emerge, younger artists take over, and what once felt fresh no longer connects with the same audience. An artist can still have hit songs that people love while their new music struggles to create the same excitement.

That is where self-awareness becomes more important than ego.

Look at Peter Miles. He enjoyed major success as one of Uganda’s prominent dancehall artists, creating songs that remain part of the country’s musical memory. But as his music career evolved, he increasingly invested in business, including ventures outside music. The music gave him a platform; he understood that he could use that platform to build something that could outlive his performing career.

Then there is Benon Mugumbya. After finding success as part of Benon & Vamposs, he gradually moved from being the person on stage to becoming one of the people building the stage. Through Swangz Avenue, he became a producer, executive, and businessman, helping create opportunities for other artists. He did not necessarily leave music; he changed his role in it.

And perhaps that is the lesson.

Changing careers is not necessarily an admission of defeat. Sometimes, it is an admission that you have grown.

For musicians, there are signs worth paying attention to. If you are constantly relying on old hits, if bookings are declining, if every new release gets less attention, if you are spending more money chasing relevance than you are making from music, or if you discover that you have another skill that is becoming more valuable, maybe it is time to consider your next chapter.

The smartest artists should not wait until the applause completely disappears before they start building something else.

Use the years when people are listening to build something that will still matter when they stop.

Build a business. Invest. Produce. Manage talent. Start a brand. Get into real estate. Become a creative director. Mentor younger artists. Whatever it is, make sure your music career creates more than just memories.

Because a hit song has a lifespan.

A good business can have a legacy.
