From a teenage schoolgirl to the mother of Uganda’s ‘King of the West’; the emotional sacrifice behind Ray G’s remarkable journey
As thousands of fans screamed his name at Kololo Airstrip, celebrating one of the biggest nights of his career, few may have known that the story of Ray G began with a teenage girl facing a life-changing choice.
Behind the glitz, the music and the roaring crowd was a mother who says she was only 16 years old, still in school and pregnant when she made a decision that would change her life forever.
She chose her baby.
And that baby would grow up to become Ray G.
‘I was still in school’
In an emotional revelation, Ray G’s mother opened up about the circumstances surrounding her son’s birth, recalling how she became pregnant while she was still a student.
At just 16, she found herself staring at a future she had never planned for.
She was still supposed to be attending classes, chasing an education and building her own future. Instead, pregnancy suddenly put everything on the line.
But according to her account, she chose to keep the pregnancy.
The decision came at a heavy price.
She dropped out of school and went ahead with the pregnancy, embracing motherhood at an age when most girls her age were still worrying about exams, friends and the next school term.
It was a sacrifice that would shape the rest of her life, and eventually shape the life of one of Uganda’s most celebrated regional musicians.
The child she refused to lose
Ray G has previously spoken about the circumstances surrounding his birth, revealing that his mother faced pressure to terminate the pregnancy but ultimately refused.
He has credited that decision with giving him the chance to live and described his mother’s choice as a blessing in his life.
Years later, that little boy whose existence once came with so much uncertainty would grow into Reagan Muhairwe, popularly known as Ray G, one of the biggest names to emerge from Western Uganda.
From his Runyankore hits to packed shows, Ray G has steadily transformed his regional popularity into a national following.
And then came Kololo.
On August 7, 2026, Ray G took his music to Kololo Airstrip, pulling thousands of fans who came to celebrate the artist affectionately known as the “King of the West.”
For the fans, it was a night of music, dancing and celebration.
For his mother, however, the sight of her son commanding such a massive crowd must carry an entirely different meaning.
Because before Ray G had fans, he had a mother.
Before he had a microphone, he had a mother making a difficult decision.
And before he had a stage at Kololo, she had to leave the classroom.
A decision that changed two lives
Teenage pregnancy is often spoken about in terms of the dreams that are lost, the education interrupted, the opportunities postponed and the difficult road that follows.
Ray G’s mother’s story offers another dimension.
She says she chose to keep her pregnancy despite being only 16 and still in school.
She sacrificed her education and embraced motherhood.
Decades later, her son has built a career that has taken him from Western Uganda to some of the biggest stages in the country.
The irony is striking.
The schoolgirl who had to leave school eventually became the mother of a man whose name would be printed on concert posters, shouted by thousands and celebrated on one of Kampala’s biggest stages.
And as Ray G stood before the massive Kololo crowd, singing to thousands of fans, his journey carried a story that started long before the fame.
