For many artists, a hit song is expected to open doors, attract opportunities and eventually translate into money.
For Spyda MC, however, the reality has been more complicated.
The conscious rapper, events host, and activist has built his career around using music to speak to young people, particularly those from Kampala’s slums.
His 2024 song “Abantu Mukisa” gave him a major boost and introduced him to a wider audience.
But while the song brought visibility, Spyda MC says it did not deliver as much financially as he had hoped.
Speaking on Galaxy TV, he first gave an honest assessment of where he currently stands in life.
I will not say that my situation is bad, nor will I say that it is very good. I am in the middle.
Still, Spyda MC believes music has changed his life in ways that go beyond money.
The rapper says his music has given him recognition, allowing him to walk into spaces where people already know who he is, even when he has never met them before.
Music has added a lot to my life. First and foremost, it gave me visibility. There are people I meet who I do not know, but they know me because of my music. That has widened my spaces and given me more places where I can position myself. It has done a lot for me.
“Abantu Mukisa” became an important part of that journey, but Spyda MC admits he expected the song to open even more doors.
He had hoped its reception would translate into more opportunities, particularly from the corporate world.
I did not reap as much as I expected. If what you get is not close to your expectations, you get a bit disappointed. We thought the song would create many opportunities, but it was not really appreciated in the corporate world and all that. But God is good all the time.
Despite the disappointment, Spyda MC remains appreciative of what the song and his music have brought into his life.
For him, “Abantu Mukisa” may not have delivered all the financial rewards he imagined, but it helped widen his reach and put his name in front of more people.
