Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja met with Archbishop Samuel Kajoba and other leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to resolve concerns surrounding the National Cleaning Day, which is held every last Saturday of the month.
The meeting ended with both sides agreeing that Seventh-day Adventist members will participate in the mandatory National Cleaning Day exercise on the last Sunday of every month instead of Saturday, in consideration of their Sabbath observance.
Nabbanja said the agreement was reached following consultations involving the church leadership, bishops and their legal teams, as well as guidance from President Yoweri Museveni.
We had a fruitful meeting with the Seventh-day Adventist Church Archbishop Samuel Kajoba, together with other bishops and their legal teams. We agreed that the Seventh-day Church members will work on Sunday, not Saturday, as advised by the President.
She explained that Adventist members will still observe the three-hour period at home on Saturday before attending church services from 10:00am.
However, they will have to observe the three hours of lockdown from their homes and start church service at 10am everywhere in the country. After all, it’s just once in a month.
Nabbanja thanked Archbishop Kajoba for accepting the President’s proposal, saying the arrangement will allow Adventists to participate in the national sanitation campaign while maintaining their religious observances.
“I want to thank the Archbishop for accepting the President’s proposal. I know going forward, the garbage around the country will reduce and eventually Cabinet will sit and come up with another proposal on the way forward. But for now, I want to appreciate you for accepting the guidance of President Museveni.”
