The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) summoned the Federation of Uganda Kojja’s and Ssenga’s Association for a meeting on August 11 over the use of vulgar and inappropriate language during lessons on relationships and cultural matters.
UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo led the meeting, which focused on the language used by some Kojjas and Ssengas during their sessions, particularly on social media.
The commission said some practitioners have increasingly used explicit and offensive language while conducting lessons that can reach large audiences online.
Thembo urged Kojjas and Ssengas to choose their words carefully when discussing sensitive subjects.
In the past, people used to cover up certain words while communicating so that they would not sound vulgar. I advise all of you to at least cover up these words, and please let us not use cameras during these lessons so that you do not spread these words.
UCC also raised concerns about recording and sharing the lessons online, noting that such content can spread beyond the intended audience.
The Kojjas and Ssengas also raised concerns about people on social media who use the titles without having the knowledge or experience associated with the roles.
They said some of these individuals use vulgar language and share inappropriate content, which they believe damages the reputation of genuine Kojjas and Ssengas.
Many people on social media are calling themselves Kojjas and Ssengas, and then they start spreading bad language. This makes all the good Ssengas and Kojjas look bad.
