Johnny Depp could be heading back to the Caribbean.
The actor is in talks to return as Captain Jack Sparrow in the sixth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirming that discussions are taking place.
Speaking to Deadline at Disney’s D23 event, Bruckheimer said the team is working on the screenplay while talking with Depp about a possible return.
We are talking to Johnny, we are working on the screenplay and hopefully we can get this done.
Depp has played the eccentric pirate in all five previous Pirates of the Caribbean films, starting with 2003’s “The Curse of the Black Pearl.”
His last appearance came in 2017’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” and his possible return has remained a major question as Disney develops another instalment.
Jack Sparrow Could Return
Bruckheimer’s comments offer the clearest indication yet that Depp could once again wear Sparrow’s trademark hat.
However, Disney has not officially announced a deal with the actor, meaning his return remains in negotiations.
The sixth film is also still in development, with the story expected to expand beyond the original franchise formula.
A New Lead for the Franchise
Margot Robbie has previously been attached to a “Pirates of the Caribbean” project, and reports indicate that the new story could place her character at the centre while Depp makes a supporting appearance.
That would give Disney an opportunity to introduce a new generation of characters while bringing back the franchise’s most recognisable figure.
For now, fans will have to wait for the talks to produce a final deal.
But for those who have spent years hoping to see Jack Sparrow again, Bruckheimer’s latest comments offer a reason to pay attention.
