The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has displayed $60,000 in cash recovered during an investigation into an alleged bribery scheme involving a senior customs official based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The money was presented to journalists in Kampala as an exhibit in a case involving Geoffrey Ssozi Kawere, the Manager for External Operations Customs in Dar es Salaam.
URA Public and Corporate Affairs Manager Robert Kalumba said the cash was allegedly solicited and received as a bribe in connection with customs clearing operations along the trade corridor.
According to URA, the money was recovered during an internal investigation into alleged corruption and operational compromises involving customs processes.
The authority said the investigation is part of broader efforts to tackle corruption, protect government revenue and prevent illicit trade activities along key regional trade routes.
URA said formal legal and disciplinary proceedings against Kawere are ongoing.
The revenue body has also stepped up enforcement measures aimed at identifying and stopping practices that undermine customs operations and facilitate illicit trade.
The authority said it remains committed to strengthening accountability among its staff and ensuring that customs processes are conducted transparently and in accordance with the law.
