Davido does not believe marriage should mean giving up control of your personal finances.
The Nigerian singer says both men and women should have their own bank accounts, even when they are in committed relationships.
He made the comment during an appearance on The Uncut Podcast after the hosts asked him about women keeping secret accounts away from their partners.
Davido said he would not take offence if his wife had one.
Yeah, I think it is good. I actually think they should; you never know. If I ever found out that my wife had a secret bank account, I would not be angry; I think everybody should have their own.
His reasoning comes down to preparing for whatever life may bring.
According to Davido, nobody knows what could happen in the future, so having money of your own can provide a level of financial security.
He also rejected the idea that personal accounts should be something only women maintain.
I think everybody should have their own.
The comments have put the spotlight on an issue that often causes disagreements between couples: Should marriage mean sharing every financial detail, or is it healthy for partners to keep some money of their own?
Davido appears to favour a balance, where couples can share a life while still maintaining individual financial independence.
