Dokta Brain may have put commercial songwriting on hold until 2030, but he believes Ugandan artists have plenty of other writers to turn to.
Speaking during Sanyuka Bigenda Bitya, the award-winning songwriter urged musicians to give other writers an opportunity, naming several songwriters he believes are already doing impressive work.
I want people to give other writers a chance because we have many talented songwriters who are writing really good music. Nikoly is one of the first names that comes to mind. There is also Shena Skies, although I met her when she was already doing her thing. Then you have Lyrical Tazy, Toxy Duda, who wrote “I Love You One, I Love You Two,” Raggie Daniel, The Luz and Ghud Trevor.
Dokta Brain had extra praise for one name on his list, Ghud Trevor.
He said Ghud Trevor has more to offer than songwriting and believes he could also make a strong singer if he gave more attention to his vocal career.
Ghud Trevor is also a very good vocalist. I actually think he could do very well as a singer if he gave it more time instead of only fronting writing.
Dokta Brain also reflected on how Uganda’s songwriting scene has changed over the years.
He recalled a time when listeners could often trace many of the country’s biggest songs to familiar names such as Nince Henry and Silver Kyagulanyi.
Now, he says, the pool has grown.
There are now many lyricists who can carry on the work I have been doing for quite some time. Back then, when you heard a really good song, you would often find that Nince Henry or Silver Kyagulanyi had written it. Now, there are many more writers capable of doing the same.
Dokta Brain’s confidence in the growing pool of songwriters comes as he puts commercial songwriting on hold until 2030.
He says he will no longer accept payment from musicians who want him to write songs for them, choosing instead to personally decide who receives the songs he writes.
